Physical exercise matters, but a dog’s day can also include sniffing, problem-solving, chewing, and rest. Tailor activities to age, mobility, and individual preferences.

Make room for sniffing

Allow your dog time to explore safe scents during walks. A shorter, slower sniff-focused outing can be engaging without requiring intense exercise.

Start simple

Scatter a small portion of the normal food allowance in a safe area, or offer a supervised food puzzle. Make the challenge easy enough that your dog succeeds.

Play safely

Use appropriately sized toys and stop if your pet becomes tired or uncomfortable. Avoid toys that can be swallowed, and inspect worn toys regularly.

Rest is enrichment too

An undisturbed sleeping area matters. Exercise needs are not a competition; ask your veterinarian about suitable activity if your dog has a health condition.
